West Brown has been with the Scottsdale (Arizona) Police Department since 1995, and currently serves as a Lead Detective in the Vehicle Crimes and Reconstruction Unit.  Detective Brown has served in his current position since 2000.  His duties have included investigation/reconstruction of serious injury and fatal collisions, hit and run investigations and commercial motor vehicle code enforcement.  Detective Brown has attended numerous courses from IPTM, Vetronix, and the Collision Safety Institute.

Detective Brown has experience instructing courses ranging from basic accident investigation through reconstruction.  He has taught for the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy, City of Scottsdale, and Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board.  Detective Brown has published a technical article entitled “Airborne Vehicle Dynamics; A Study into the Background, Viability and Accuracy of Airborne Speed Estimating.”  He has also published a textbook entitled “Accident Investigations” which is currently used by AZ POST as a text for two collision reconstruction courses.  Detective Brown’s most recent technical paper entitled, “Analysis of the GM Sensing and Diagnostic Module in Linear Momentum Collisions:  Real Case Analysis,” was presented at the first annual CDR Users Symposium in Dallas, Texas in February 2006.  This paper was published in the premier issue of “Collision, The International Compendium for Crash Research,” June of 2006.  Detective Brown was also featured on Discovery Health Channel’s series, “Accident Investigator” for the 2006-2008 season.

He has served as an adjunct faculty member with the University of North Florida (IPTM) since 2005, and has specialized in the field of Pedestrian Crash Investigation and Reconstruction as well as the analysis of Event Data Recorders on passenger vehicles.

West has been a part of the Stay Alive Arizona Coalition since 2003. He has devoted countless hours to the development of the Teen Leadership Retreats, Live Broadcast Mini Series and the growth of the coalition.  West has been a Board Director since the fall of 2005 and continues to serve on the Executive Planning Committee for student programs. He also hosts one of our Live Broadcast episodes - ‘Behind the Scenes of a Fatal Collision’.
